Sheet Metal Releifs / Cutouts; am I Doing it Wrong?

I'm reverse engineering a sheet metal part that we did not get the solid model for. I have to make a label fixture for it. I made the main bends but couldn't figure out how they did the bend reliefs / cutouts.

My method was to create the initial bends.

Then cut the cutouts using a sketch on the side

Then adding back the material to make the reliefs using a sketch.

When I open the flat pattern it looks pretty good, but damned if I can figure out how to do this without all the slicing and extruding.

Thanks!
