Sheet metal - folding inner tab from flat part

I have a flat sheet with a tab that need folding up

It needs to bend up 90° where the grey line is. I need to measure how much of the tab will stay proud of the surface. I don't want to add a flange.

I thought this would be something simple. Am I going to have to add a flange, unfold, trim to suit, and then re-fold? Or, is there an sane option?

It looks like you need to use the sketched bend feature.  Are you just trying to find out some distances and don't really need the bend?  I'm kind of confused...

Trying to do this:

But without using the flange feature

Using the sketch bend:

I tried what you are saying and thought it was odd the result that I got when changing bend position.

Bend centerline, material outside and material inside all give versions of the image below;

Using bend outside gives the following;

You might have to adjust your bend line to be half the distance of your bend radius away from the end of the cut.

I played with this a little more.  As soon as the bend radius hits the end of the cut is bends the other faces as well, which makes sense.  The bend line must be at least the bend radius away from the end of the cut.

In looking at your screen shot it appears that you are using a square end on the cut. I think if you place a 1/2 circle (arc) on the end and draw the bend line from the center of the arc as Tony suggests it will work. or you could try playing with the bend location (side of the line or line being mid bend. I think what is happening is that your bend on the very end of the cut is needing a relief thus causing problems.

Casey added pictures with the same idea.

Select your face and sketch a line from one arc center (top of the arc) to the other arc center. then use the sketch bend feature as Steve Calvert said.

Well Tony, he gets the second pic   I thought, as you're thinking, that would work.

Martin, what are you trying to achieve here?

I need to know what measurement (proud from flat) I am left with after the tab is bent.

We get the plates flat, and I want to mimic them getting folded.

If you still have trouble figuring it out - attach your *.sldprt file here.

• Re: Sheet metal - folding inner tab from flat part

This is the file. As I said, I'd rather not use the flange feature beause I want to ensure the folded measurement is correct.

However, needs must...

Well, you have a later release - so I can't open  your file - but the attached is one way.
