Do a File -> Save-As and select one of the export extensions you need. Step, Parasolid, IGES to name a few.

Well, I think you need an extension for the file to work. What are you trying to accomplish?

As Steve has correctly mentioned, it needs an extension for systems to know what format it is.

Michi,.. here is a link showing the file formats 3DS Max allows.
I'd suggest saving a test file for all the formats which are available and that 3DS Max excepts.
Then have you friend test which one he prefers.
