Adding a plane to a rounded surface

Ok. 4th attempt to solve this problem.

Anybody who reads this post, please disregard past post on this same part or subject. I'm trying to eliminate the confusion, misunderstandings and miscommunications. I'm not taking a different approach to solving this problem.

The currant images that I'm posting here are of a rebuilt part.

I'm now asking for the way to get the plane shown in Fig. 1 to the front of the curved surface in fig. 2.

As you can see in the manager on the left, I'm not given the options to move the plane forward into the position I need it to be in.

It looks like your plane is in the middle of your curved face... if so you can just select the midpoint of an edge and the face

To select the midpoint just hover your cursor nearby and it should appear

Hi Frank,
Okay, you have a few simple options from here. From the plane you have already created, you can create a parallel plane just by clicking on the "Reference Geometry" feature button, select 'Plane' and then click on the plane that you created. When the property box opens up, just input the dimension from your existing plane to the extreme outside edge of your arc and click okay. See my example below.....
So in this example, the pink frame is my existing plane (the same as the one you already created). So, I clicked on that and you can see it appears in the property box on the left as 'First Reference'. Then all I did was enter a figure of 54.50mm which is what I needed a new parallel plane at. In your case, this figure will be whatever the dimension is from the face of your existing plane to the most outside edge of that cylindrical arc. Then just click the green tick and you are done.

ANOTHER METHOD

You could also not bother with either moving or creating another plane and just create your extrusion sketch on that plane but then offset the actual boss extrusion. See example below....
See how in this example (only done to show you), that my sketch is on the new plane that I created above but my actual extruded boss does not come from the plane, it starts 10.00mm away because I dictated that option in the property box. You can do this option from the plane you have now.

Just create a plane like in Fig. 1. Then create second plane parallel to the first one and tangent to the surface.

Frank,
Don't overcomplicate it, this part can be made with simple extruded bosses and cuts.
With a part that might get machined, just think about how someone would make it.
They would probably start with a big chunk of metal, and then start cutting away to get the most prominent shape.
This is where you should start - find the "profile" that is the most major feature of the part, and build from there.
The more you know about how the parts will be made, the easier this will get.
Don't worry about the advanced features like sweeps and lofts until you understand the basic extrudes.

Hello, u can use reference from that cylindrical surface if you want plane which will be tangent to it.

I'm not designing a part or assembley. I'm trying to model a part that is already in production. For several years.

What is your zip file ? Is it a video ? A text / image file ?

What program does it require to open it ?

I tried to open it but got nothing.

OK Dave, (and other members) this new fig. may give you a better idea of what I'm trying to solve. You can see my right plain is perpendicular to the bottom edge of the quarter shell. The QTR shell is always in this position in the finish product. I need to new plane (seen in red) to move forward to the outside of the QTR shell so I can then apply a profile or extrusion at the correct location on the outside of the QTR shell.

Hi Frank,
Personally you would have been better off sticking with the other plane you had already created and doing your next extrusion from there because from the central plane you have now we have to go back a few steps and talk about creating planes exactly where you need them again.

So how about this. Start a sketch on the face highlighted in blue. Sketch a line from the inside (or outside) corners of the curved surface. Next sketch a line from the center to the outside face and make it perpendicular to the first sketch line. Now create a plane using the point on the outside face and the sketch line from the center. Is this what you are trying to do?

Although if I knew what kind of extrusion you were trying to make on the outside of the face, I may be able to suggest a way to do it without creating a plane.

Okay Frank,
For the sake of ease and settling your frustration, attached is your original part but quickly modified. Just tell me if the end result is what you require? Note:- the handle has not been 'Swept Cut' yet. I also haven't fully defined your sketch's for you, this is something you need to learn and is critical. (I will help if needed).

Just have a look and if the model is correct then review the final steps I did and you will see how close you were!

I'm just hoping that my version of SW2016 will open on your machine........

I can recreate the plane in Fig. 1 / 2 in 5 seconds. I just created the recent image to communicate where my Right plane is. i cannot forward project a plane off of the right plane because it's not at the correct angle that I need to transfer a profile sketch.

Hi Solid,
Mate, I just did a quick resolution in a rush working with what he already had. I just added a little piece onto the end of the handle so that it completely met the arc (it didn't before), and then did a cut extrude to remove what he had coming through the cylindrical arc to clean it up!

Here are 2 pic's of the part that I'm actually trying to recreate in SW. Maybe these will help others understand better.
The disc section is 1" inch in diameter. The tubing portion is 4-5/8" in lenght x 1/2" square.

You will note that this handle also has a bend in another direction, to be accurate your sweep path would have been best done with a 3D sketch. (Just saying)

I understand now Dave. Attached is how I would have done it if the handle is straight. And if it is a piece of tubing then I probably would have used a sweep.

Hi Frank,

Since you are using a SHS why not make that part a weldment.
Part attached so you can see 2015.
You will need to check weldment path sketch for correct dims cause i don't do inch's
Also to extract ZIP files,
find zip folder usaually in downloads,
RMB extract all,
this make another folder usually in same place as zip unless you tell it to go somewhere else.
now you can open part from that folder.

Yes Dave and I both attached files (and I do not know why you cannot see them) but they were done in SW2016 which I do not think SW2015SE will open.

Okay, since mine is in SW2016, try using Ned's model as his is 2015 and also allows for SHS tubing. Looks neat right from the get-go!
