The problem is I have no idea how to make the propeller move along with the shaft. I have already tried mating them together but the propeller still moves on its own while the shaft just sits still.
Best way is probably to select the planes from the feature tree for each component. Collapse the tree, expand the two parts that you wish to mate, select the 2 planes then hit the mate button. The planes you'll want to use should run parallel to the axis.
You can mate the reference planes of each part so they rotate as one.
To make an animation, use the motion study tab under the feature tree. You can add a motor to spin your propeller.

Thanks for the reply. What if my shaft does not have a plane on it? Does that mean I need to create it on the part itself?
Everything will have the default planes. Go into system options>Feature manager and change defualt planes to show
