How do I mate the front plane of a part (the first part that is put into the assembly) to the front plane of the assembly?
Once I add more parts to the assembly, I'd like to cross section using the front plane of the assembly as my referance.

I just noticed that when I was inserting the part, the "Insert component" window on the left side of the screen Says "Hit OK button to insert a component at the origin".
This did the trick.

This is exactly what I was going to suggest. But you beat me to it.
To really answer your question you have to understand that by default the first component will be fixed in place and that you can then un-fix it and mate as you want. Otherwise, the second and on component inserted will float unless it's snapped with the OK button.

Best would be to create your files such that when you drop/add them in assembly their front plane matches with assembly.
Else float that part and add the mates between the planes as needed.
