Hi Christian, can you elaborate on this 'Find References' a bit? I have checked the below solutions and while good they actually didn't solve my problem.

Actually, as an edit to this... I have just had a chance to make a totally new assembly separate from the original one I was working with. I made two new virtual parts within this assembly and was able to make the references as I wanted to. So, is my issue due to the fact that the new part is not a virtual part within the context of the assembly? See below this second assembly which is functioning as I would like:

I have found the solution- the reason the second method and the first did not was due to blind holes being hidden by the part I was editing being on top of it. I had to change the options for Selection of Hidden Edges to allow picking on the part below the part I was working on:
