Configurations Question

I have a sub-assembly that has three different configurations.  Each configuration suppresses certain parts, changes dimensions, etc., and the parts are driven through equations based on a reference sketch.  As I flip through configurations with the sub-assembly open, everything works hunky-dory (no problems so far).

Now, I put that sub-assembly into a top level assembly.  I select the sub-assembly in the model tree and use the drop-down menu to change configurations.  When I do, some of the parts do not update to the correct size, even with a rebuild.  They only update when I re-select the sub-assembly and activate it by using "Edit Component".  Then everything comes out right.

Am I doing something wrong, or is this just a "feature" of SolidWorks?  Are there any workarounds?

(P.S.  Please do not tell me to press Ctrl-Q.  This solution has never worked in the past, and it will not work now )
