In addition, creating a link value also creates a global variable, which can be used as such, although this is uneditable in equations, it is editable wherever you happen to link it. The opposite of your situation, but nice sometimes, especially for patterns that require you to know how many instances you have before you do the pattern
If you use Custom Properties to control your dimensions, you find them at 'File Properties' instead of 'Global Variables'
Same result but I tend to use the 'Custom Properties Tab' mainly for my Custom Properties such as Author, Quantity, Material etc. and the 'Global Variables Tab' for controlling dimensions.
I suggest using custom properties instead of Global Variables. Custom Properties can be modified on the screen in the Property Tab.
