filled surface feature "merge result" grayed out

I have a model that I am trying to replicate. I am trying to do the same thing that is done in this tutorial (Introduction to Surface Modelling in SolidWorks [Webcast] - YouTube ) (starting at about 32:45 if anyone wants to see it) which is using the "merge result" option to cut away part of the surface of the model. For some reason when I use the filled surface feature, I do not have the option to "merge result", which I would like to do so that I am able to cut away this part of the model, the same way the tutorial did. Not sure what to do, thanks. File attached. The section that I am trying to fill and then merge is shown below.
