How do I get my file icons to show part preview instead of generic solid works icon?
Did you tried registering the sldwinshellextu.dll file as described in that post?
Is it all of them, or just some of them?
I think I've seen it show the generic icon if they haven't been saved as the latest release.
edit: just did a quick test, and it worked
All of them. We have recently updated to 17 service pack 2. Ever since then, I have lost the part preview on my file icons.
Did this get unchecked?
No, this was checked.
Are you running Windows 7?
There was a goofy setting in Win7 -
From the KB:
In the Windows 7 Performance Options dialog, there is an option called "Show thumbnails instead of icons".
To access it:
- Right-click on Computer in the Start menu or on the Desktop, and select Properties
- This will open the Properties window, and the very lower-left-hand corner, click Performance Information and Tools
- From the margin on the left side of the Window, click Adjust visual effects
- On the Visual Effects tab, find and check "Show thumbnails instead of icons".
Also, note the four radio buttons at the top of the Visual Effects tab, "Let Windows choose...", "...best appearance", "...best performance", and "Custom".
If "Adjust for best performance" is chosen, all previews in Windows Explorer and application Open dialogs will be disabled.
I am running windows 7. Which radio button do I choose?
I would go for "best performance"
Ugh...unfortunately that didn't work either. It's just annoying. Maybe I just have to live with it.
Did you give it the full on shutdown and restart?
(sounds goofy, but some settings require it . . .)
I tried the re-boot. That didn't help.
Could this be a Microsoft settings issue?
I like to occasionally blame "Uncle Bill" for SOLIDWORKS issues . . .
Did you update the graphics driver after updating to SW17-SP2 ?
Run the SOLIDWORKS Rx > Diagnostics tool to check.
I ran SOLIDWORKS Rx > Diagnostics with no success either.
That makes sense for what I'm seeing. Thought they were showing cause I had my tongue held the correct way.
See this thread:
Wasn't working for me either. So I unchecked the Show Graphics Icon in Settings, closed Settings, closed Solidworks, reopened and rechecked the box and now it's working.
Hope this helps.
Force the computer to "think about what it did" - I like it!
Hadn't thought about it that way, but you're 100% correct! LMAO
Check if this helps SolidWorks Thumbnails Graphics Do Not Display
When I change to the tile option in explorer, then I do get the part preview. For some reason I am missing the thumbnail option in explorer.
Thank you! Seems to be working now.
