Using Letters Instead of Numbers for Item Identifiers

We routinely use Inventor for one of our clients and have made it a standard practice of using letters instead of numbers to identify items in assembly drawings. This allows us to include item quantity in split item balloons without confusing the guys on the shop floor. Previously, the large number of numbers on each drawing view would occasionally lead to errors. Now, there is no chance of confusing an item identifier with a quantity.

Is there any practical way of using letters instead of numbers to identify BOM items?
