Linking a Piping and Instrumentation Diagram to Excell

So as a younger engineer and new at my company I was put to the task of cross checking a large Bill of Material in Excell to a Draft Sight (AutoCAD) Piping and Instrumentation Diagram (P&ID) or schematic. The drawings are done by a senior engineer who never uses Solidworks just AutoCAD. I was a bit confused why the process they've been using been using is to grab an existing BOM from a different project, print it out along with the P&ID drawing and then physically cross check with a hi-liter by putting the two documents side by side.

My question is why haven't they been drawing a schematic that automatically builds a BOM as you populate it with parts? I spend a few hours a day just cross-checking. So I know you can automatically generate a BOM from an assembly, but how could I generate one from a schematic?
