Barry,.. I have not.. only explored/played around with VR so far.... but have done some exporting of FBX.. and I used a few exporting methods.
and.. this was the site I visited regarding SW and VR.. VR with Solidworks – CAD-VR
(best) - using simlab - fbx exporter (using sw image quality) ... Simlab 3D Plugins - FBX exporter for SolidWorks
(good) - using the trial version of Visualize (I believe you can re-tessellate sldprt/sldasm files in Visualize? )
(good) - using exporting to Rhino3D.. and saving as FBX (have control of the mesh output)
btw,..the stuff I played with regarding Unity was using SketchFab.. and they have a publishing addon... SolidWorks - Exporters - Sketchfab
Thank you for this response - I am pursing some of your suggestions now...
Do you mean you can adjust the tessellation on export?
I am using Simlab Composer, which I thought had similar capability as their specific plugins. When importing the SolidWorks model into Simlab, the tessellation is set by the SolidWorks document preferences (Image Quality).
I will check the Composer Integration utility, maybe that works differently if its grabbing the model from an open SolidWorks session.
Chris.. no, but I can understand how that could be misunderstood.. I've updated my response ,.. "using simlab - fbx exporter (using sw image quality) "
Hi Barry! Try to use MR Builder Lite app for HoloLens to view your fbx there. Maybe that will work!
I'm going to answer my own question here...
...based on my experience so far, there are very limited options.
The goal is to generate FBX and have an ability to reduce the polygon count if necessary.
The best product out there for decimation \ reducing polygon (triangle) count is simplygon...recently this company was purchased by microsoft. My only viable path has been to export out a solidworks assy to solidworks visualize, then save out an fbx from visualize...then, open the fbx in simplygon and use it to reduce the poly count. The premium version of visualize does not offer a feature to reduce poly count, as i had hoped.
If Simlab did not work for you, I don't know of any other plugins or apps that can run within SolidWorks.
Polytrans is a stand alone application, but appears to be able to import a SolidWorks Assembly and save an FBX. Convert and translate SOLIDWORKS CAD files to 3ds Max, Cinema 4D (C4D), Unity (virtual and augmented reality, VR/AR), Sk…
I've been successfully using FBX files with Unity, with a workflow of models from Solidworks to produce this - TOP-TEC Virtual Reality Showroom Demo - YouTube.
My workflow was to use the OBJ exporter here - https://forum.solidworks.com/thread/54270
Then use Blender (free) to import the OBJ/MTL files, and then export to FBX.
I haven't found a good way to reduce the polygon count yet. There are some tools for this in blender, but I found that typically the removed important detail. You can also play with the exporter settings to effectively reduce the precision of the output and decrease the polygon count.
Being unable to reduce polygon count has meant I needed some excessively powerful hardware to run that showroom demo, if you've found a way to reduce polygon count effectively I would be very interested to know.
Hope this helps!
