Hi all,

Iam little confused in adding connector information to a symbol in solidworks electrical. Suppose i have a motor drive for which i need to add manufacturer part and symbol in solidworks electrical. Drive contains several communication interfaces like CanOpen,Modbus, ethernet which i need to incorporate in symbol and manufacturer part. How to effectively display that information in a schematic page. Does anyone have a proper standard to follow, when deals with symbol creation like this ?.

You either need to add a symbol and part to your library matching your requirements or build the symbol using "insert black box". Google black boxes for a quick rundown on their behavior.

I have a similar question. Do you specify all contacts on the connectors or do you draw them as only one 'pin/connection' for lets say a can bus connector where you insert a prefab cable?

And I also have a drive/motor combo with a power connector with two pins. I am not sure how to draw the mating connector in the schematic. The symbol in the library has two pins for this, but there not grouped as a connector. Should I add the connector to the schematic or will it be part of the cable?

I feel that most of my questions (including many more) come down to a lack of common drawing 'habits'. Most questions I have are not on how to do it with SWE, but more like 'how do I draw it/whatshould it look like/what makes sense'.

Is there a good reference somewhere on how to draw schematics (not necessarily SWE-based), preferebly european style?

  Now what I am doing is that I will draw the symbol and will represent the connector as a pin, label it with connectors name. Now the problem with this approach is that I can't show cable connected to this connector with pin termination. I can't also show connector and cable wire information on the same page!.

    Hi Jerry,
    
    I don't really do much of this but have you looked at showing this on a single line drawing. You could basically show your drive and connectors with a cable connecting them. Then in your multiline schematic you can show all of the individual connections of the cable cores. Like I said though I don't have much experience with this and our electrical guys hated these types of pictorial single line diagram when they saw them.

      Hi Andrew,
      If it's a universal connector, this is ok. But in the case of the custom-built connector, i have to show the connector pin information somewhere.

  Anytime I see a "I just grab it off the shelf" scenario, we can model it in SWE as a wire, we aren't concerned with point to point pinouts, just where to plug in either end. So add "CAN BUS" or "Ethernet Cable" or "HDMI" as a wire in your wire styles manager.

    Sorry to jump in on an existing thread, but this one is related to a question I have. Evan Stanek, any suggestions for "off-the-shelf" items where one end needs to have individual cable cores represented? See Representing cables where one end has loose wires and the other has a built-in connector.
