What happened to my hole callout file?

    Sarah Dwight

So I installed 2017 and reset all the file locations which was a breeze with the EDIT ALL button.

But now SW can't find the hole callout file??

My 2016 version called out the "lang\english" folder so I set up 2017 the same way.

What have I done to lose the file locate-ability??

I feel like I had this problem before... and solved it but now can't remember how... *sigh*

I have all my call out info in a template folder on the server, that way when we update/upgrade all I need to do is just check/change the settings, also once you get it working do yourself a huge favor and use the Copy Settings Wizard, so you don't need to change anything again except load the save settings...

Some file locations can only look to one folder to find the file it's looking for, so to be able to add a new folder location for the Hole Callout Format File you'll have to delete the current one.

Custom Property Files are the same way.

Can you check "symbol lib. file" from tools>Options... to make sure your SW is linked to the correct folder

Thanks for bringing this up, you have given me motivation to look into this again.  I ran into the same problem and needed to resolve this for our group.

This is what I had to do to get it working for me:

I had to map the calloutformat.txt to the correct location, as several people have suggested.

I had to then go into the Toolbox Setup (Solidworks>SolidWorks Tools>Toolbox Settings 2017) and "Copy Standard":

Then I had to name my new standard exactly the same as it was defined in the callout file. Here's the entry in the callout file:

Now it appears in the list:

And now my special holes show up in 2017:

I hope this helps solve your problem.  I now have to manually edit the toolbox settings to get the custom sizes back.  But that should only take a few minutes.  Let us know if you figure something else out.

Do a search in explorer of your C drive for gtol.sym and edit the symbol library file location to match . Most likely your IT dept removed a previous version and didn't tell you (like our fine IT dept did to us). Hopefully you didn't spend over a days worth of man hours trying to figure it out.

Since we added many custom symbols in gtol.sym so we put this file in the server so everyone can share

Christian Chu I created a few myself, because we inevitably have to "bug" notes and such.  We reserve the triangle numbered and lettered options available for revisions and ECNs.  So, we need additional "bugs" for notes.

Here are the simple bugs I created:

Here's the entry in our gtol.sym file to get those symbols:

All, if there are custom symbols you'd like added to SOLIDWORKS, please feel free to submit them in an enhancement request via your customer portal.  Usually, if the symbols are added, they will not match your original library names and also may variety a bit in shape to meet certain requirements.  However, if we do add them, you'll not need to maintain them on your own afterwards.  Symbols most likely to be added are ones that try to meet some standard or common industry practice.  So, if you have symbols specific to your own operation but aren't used elsewhere, these will not likely be a priority to be added.

It is fairly easy to just add our own, then they'll match company standards..

                                    Thanks for suggestion, Matt

Here are some symbols I added to gtol for inspection numbers

2-1: 2 is view number  and 1 is the dimension number and so on

                                    GT is GDT number

I created a macro which will added inspection number to each dim on the dwg so we can use it to communicate with vendor easier

Just wondering if this is used for many here ???

Matthew Lorono thanks for replying.  I work for a DOT and we have a lot of notes on our plans.  So, in 2d CAD we have quite a few different "bugs" to select from.  I just was looking to see if anybody has any that were not part of the standard set that resemble the ones in our 2d CAD files.  And I agree the ones I'm asking for probably should not be part of the "standard" set.

John Stoltzfus is correct, they are easy enough to make...I was just fishing for more symbols.

However, after Christian Chu clarified what he's doing with symbols, it appears what he is doing should definitely be given more consideration regarding an Enhancement Request.

Here are few lines I added to gtol file

                                          *GT-01,Dim Number GT-01,

                                          A,ARC 1.2,.45,.60,90.,270

                                          A,LINE 1.2,-.15,3.5,-.15

                                          A,LINE 1.2,1.05,3.5,1.05

                                          A,ARC 3.5,.45,.60,270,90

                                          A,TEXT 2.3,.5, GT-01

it's a little bit of detail work to have it look right then I used a scrip generating the set and embed to the original gtol file

My suggestion is SW  provides users a tool to customize (adding symbols) their own gtol  file instead of adding all kind of symbols to the gtol file which takes more time for others when they want to search for symbols (as the list of symbols from the current gtol is already long)
