I can save documents in word and then save as and give the document a new name and then the two are separate documents.
Why is this apparently not possible in SW?
What am I doing wrong?

It kinda of is the same.
The big difference is however, except for the fact that in Word there's no parametric linkage, that in Word if you have a document called Alpha and you save as it as Beta then the document that is open before you will be Beta. In Solidworks the document that is open before you is still Alpha.

SW is a bit more complex than Word.
Check out the options in the bottom left of the save as dialog.

You should be able to use to use one of the options
