Let's discuss when to pattern a body verse a feature...
I'd like to know what methods others use.
I have never had to pattern a body, as my intent has always worked out to not need to...
Not to say that it is notworth trying, or investigating.
My first choice is using Mirror Bodies, as it seems to be the cleanest and seamless. Depending on the component, if you use Mirror features then there are times the Features don't blend or bond and there are seams or other features showing or sticking out....
Plus I like seeing the whole body not just a single conglomeration of cells
My study here:
How to improve linear pattern rebuild performance by ~10X
I frequently work with multi-body Parts. Anytime I'm patterning or mirroring a body I choose "Bodies". It just seems to work better. In fact, choosing "Features" sometimes doesn't work at all for bodies. This would also apply if I have a single-body Part, but want to duplicate it.
I use "Features" for holes, cuts, etc. Basically for any feature that didn't create material. And you didn't mention it, but on one or two rare occasions I've needed to use "Faces" (see this Discussion: Anybody ever found a use for Face Selection in the Pattern prop-manager?).
Read that, thought it was great Shaodun Lin!
Certainly worth noting in this discussion.
A feature is just pure information. A body is the result of applying such information.
Pattern features if you want to create intelligent patterns using Vary Sketch or Instances to Vary.
Pattern bodies, if you can, for simply copying geometry.
There is another limitation: patterning features cannot create disconnected bodies.
Without interrogating it, patterned or mirrored bodies update if the base body is updated?
Of course. Is all about history.
You would really like my Advanced Update course, Scott.
The #1 reason for using SW is that it offers best ability to decipher some crazy "design intent."
Most of the time I pattern features as I am normally only patterning a single (or group) of features, such as holes or fillets/chamfers. Although as others have said above there are limitations on patterns working out correctly and not creating disjoint areas. Only time I have done body is when I make half a part and then mirror the second side.
