Why do my appearances disappear in my assembly?

I often use appearances in my models, to make it easier to differentiate between the parts in th assembly, but it also makes it look better, when showing images to the customer.
But now I am experiencing something strange:

When I open the assembly everything seems fine. But sometimes, after doing a rebuild, all appearances disappear, leaving me with a gray mesh of parts.

When I close the model and opens it again, everything is back to normal. Until it happens again.
I attached an image to show what I mean.

Can someone help me?

Correct Answer

On a couple of those parts shown there is a grey appearance set in assembly level but I can't tell if it is a assembly you inserted into the assembly you are using. Right click on your top level assembly and make sure you haven't set a gray color for your entire assembly somehow. Since you are setting all appearance at part level you can remove any set in assembly level. All assembly level appearances will override your part level ones in hierarchy.

I can confirm that that looks very gray Where do you apply your appearances, in the part or the assembly? Are they attached to the materials you use or just assigned by hand? When you extend the appearances section in the feature tree, do the parts show gray appearances in the assembly?

I typically assign them in the assembly, but on component level (by hand, not attached to materials).
When I extend the appearances in the feature tree, everything seems to be normal.

But I noticed that when I open a part, the part opens with appearances, though it is completely gray in the main assembly.

I don't know if I explained it clearly, but I meant the menu shown below. It often explains why colors in parts/assemblies are so unexpected.

I think you are right, Derek.
I must have somehow applied an appearance onto the entire assembly. I only wonder how the assembly would appear normal, when opening the file.
