Would it work to make the material into multi-layer. Then photoshop the decal onto a Specular square layer. You might be able to use tile and shift to size and move the decal to position it perfectly.
I understand the issue you are running into:
In order to have the decal follow the curved surface, you need to increase the Decal Depth. But this then makes the decal show up on the reverse side of the surface.
Check out this older tutorial from the Bunkspeed days. It shows how to create a multi-layer material with texture mapping to achieve the result you're looking for. It's a bit long, but a good watch.
