    Question about Reverse Engineering Methods

    Manos Stivaktakis

      Hello,

i am an undergraduate mechanical engineer student and on this semester i am working on my thesis. My work is to scan a part with a non contact 3d camera and then create a 3d model to evaluate its geometry.

I have already created a surface model and i choosed  to save it as a *.stp file. I tried to open it in solidworks but my model recognized as a feature and i can't sketch on it  but only on the plane i created based on the nodes or on curves the model has.

I tried to use feature evaluation but the program crashes and i think that is because of the type of the surfaces. I haven't got a geometry based on basic geometrical 3d shapes but i fitted surfaces based on the shape and form of the polygon curves by using a second program.

I would like to ask if there is any way on solidworks to make feature evaluation on free from shape 3d models? Could you please give some ideas to work on?

      Thanks,

      Manos
