Assemblies Will Not Open

I'm wondering if anyone can help me out with a problem I'm having? None of my assemblies will open. The strange thing is that my part files open with no problems. I'm using SolidWorks 2008 SP 5.0. When I try to open an assembly it begins the process of opening but it then shuts down SolidWorks and I get a message box stating "An error has occurred and SolidWorks needs to re-start". The message box gives me the option to "restart and recover files". I have selected this option several times and SolidWorks does restart but it does the same thing when I try to open an assembly. I have never experienced this problem before. What I can tell you is that the problem is consistent. I have opened several parts from several different assemblies and they all open with no problems. I have also tried to open several different assemblies and sub-assemblies, and non have opened and when I try they all shut down the program and give me the same message I spoke about above. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.

How long has this been going on?
Have you contacted your VAR; this is a critical issue.
Did you make any system changes prior to this occurring?
System specs?

This problem first occurred this morning when I went to open the assembly I was working on yesterday afternoon. The only thing I changed yesterday in "System Options, Performance" was the speed of curvature generation. I have done this before without issue so I don't suspect this to be the problem. The only other change I made under "Document Properties, Detailing, Annotation Display" was I checked the "Shaded cosmetic threads" box to make my threads visible in some of the parts and the assembly I was working on. I'm new to Solidworks but did not suspect this could be related to the problem I'm experiencing. My intention is to contact my VAR if I can't resolve the problem though the forum. Thanks for your help.

Some things to try.

Try renaming the HKCU key to force a rebuild of the SW registry. If it then works, then something got messed up in your settings.

If that doesn't work, open the file in the advanced mode with the structure only. If it opens, try unsuppressing stuff to see if something particular has a problem.

Don't forget you could even do a Windows Restore to a time before this problem to see if problem goes away. These actions can also be undone.

Can you open files in question on another SolidWorks machine?

We have had similar problems with opening assemblies -- Our solution (which our VAR has been unable to help so far) is to select "Quick view / Selection open" before opening the file. Select one part and click "Open selected". Then we right click on the main item in the tree (your assembly) and select "Show with dependents" to finish opening the assembly so we can continue to work. I hope that this will get you into a working state again.

If this does work for you, do not take this as an acceptable solution, so make sure to still contact your VAR and have them find a solution that does not require you to jump through hoops.
