I have seen this asked once and no one answered. So, I am going to ask again. Is there a way to create custom note borders?
I recommend creating custom symbols in gtol.sym which can be found in C:\Program Files\SOLIDWORKS Corp\SOLIDWORKS \lang\english
Note: you can copy this file and save in the server so others at your work can share. All you need to do is point to the new location
1) Make sure you make a copy of this file (just in case you screw up and still have the back up one)
2) Use notepad to edit this file
3)Go all the way to bottom and add you symbol
a. Use line to draw 6 lines as shown in your symbol - see below sample
b.Add text X001 and so on
Here is a sample from mine
*GT-01,Dim Number GT-01,
A,TEXT 2.3,.5, GT-01
you can replace GT-01 with your note and add extra lines for your note's border
Are you looking for the standard notes with a border or are you planing on creating your own symbol for dimension call outs??
I am looking to add to the standard note features border list.
Have you tried to create a custom block?
I just tried one - see below image
Yes, this is my current work around.
Exactly, what's your question? You want to add your custom border in the border pull down menu as shown in the image?
if so, what shape you want for the note border as I believe someone already created some?
yes, this is exactly what I mean.
Do you have a sample picture you could upload or blocks that you're currently using??
Agreed with John,
We need to see what shape you want for your note's border. if you have some complex shapes, it's much simple to use the custom block which you can draw whatever you want and save it while it's more complicated and time consumer to try to create one from the geometry file
Here is what I've done for the dimension numbers - it's such a simple shape but a pain in the neck to create them
They are pretty simple borders, but if it is that complicated then the custom sketch blocks may be the way to go.
like I said, I have made these into blocks and they work ok. I just feel the notes with borders are easier to place and maneuver.
X001 is a sequence number (under controrl) or a string of characters of any length?
X001 is a material code. Depending on the material class we would use a different style tag border. example we use a hexagon border for hardware and we use a diamond for fabric and so on. Most of the shapes are included in solidworks.
I assume you ask because a string of text at any length would then have to stretch the border? I would assume this is harder then the latter.
I will have to play with this at home. Thank you guys for this. I believe you have steered me to the right path. Where would these symbols be found (inside solidworks) after I add them? Would it be included in the note border list?
Check out Rob Edwards on page 14 - this might work for you....
What are your most impressive tricks of solidworks, Please spread.
Thank you, John,
it's exactly what I have in mind - Rob Edward explained very detail how to create custom symbols which you can preset in your gtol.sym file
It you get a sequence number of text, then it's worth to spend your time on it (use line and arc); otherwise, custom block is a way to go
