I need save BOM template with empty rows. I create BOM, add rows and hide item number (I guess - I'm sorry, I haven't got English version).
My BOM:
But If I save it as template, and insert to drawing, empty rows are deleted.
Could you help me with this problem?
I don't believe you can save a BOM template with empty rows.
really not looking for for the ability to do blank rows but permanent rows. we have to parts that go into every assembly we make and it would be really easy to capture each time if the rows were permanent additions to the BOM and always showed up every time we added the parts list. and on the rare occasion I dont need them I can just hide those two rows.
So do you add those parts into assembly OR not?
Are those parts something like oil, grease, etc.? If yes then create dummy parts with no geometry but all properties and put them in the library. Next start a new assembly and add those parts in there (you may add them all to a folder). Now save that assy file as template. Now next time you make a new assy, use that template and BOM would list those parts
yes, very much like adding grease or oil. it is two small pouches containing material similar to desiccant. Right now they are manually captured in a note which I want to get away from since they are value added material and need to be accounted for as actually parts even if it is shop supply. I tried the embedded in the assembly option and solidworks told me that an assembly referencing parts could not be saved as a template. oh wait! or was it cause they were virtual parts it wouldnt let me?! I'll try again and see.

I hope it helps Filip because it will sure help me. We always have to add extra lines to our casting assemblies due to having a certain "Casting Alloy" or "Filler Material" and other miscellaneous items. Excellent call Deepak, the thought of creating a dummy part never crossed my mind. Thank you for that one.

Nope, wont even let me reference real parts and save as template. Gives me the same warning.
Had been using dummy parts for over 5 years now. We used to manually add row for oil, grease etc. and we're feed up doing this with every assy drawing. So one day dummy part appeared and made everyone happy
Now it did let cheat and rename the .sldasm to .asmdot and place the template file into the correct location. It shows the new template file and lets me start an assembly with it. And new assembly automatically has componets in it. Hey!!! it even worked with virtual parts!!! This could be an answer to this Deepak! Although, I didnt finish telling you the other half of why I'm trying to figure this out. We use the routing tool here heavily. So now I need to see if the routing tool will let me reference the same component in multiple identified spools. if not then this solution may not work.

I am interested in this too. What do you do about the quantity? If I want to have some particular type of grease or some loctite, and I add the part to my assembly (either template or not), do I just manually overwrite the quantity, or is there a means of getting a * or something like "As Required" into the quantity for these parts automatically?
I guess I could make a work around with an IF statement linked to a Custom Property, but I'm sure you've got a Deepak solution that is better than the hack I'd come up with...

Hi all,
I need BOM in special format with empty row, because we use special template for BOMs.
Look, this is our template in excel. This excel table we upload to SAP via special transaction, which need empty row for copy data from excel to SAP. First row is copied as name for BOM (number and descriptions) and next rows are copied as BOM items. Transaction need some partition in between row with name of BOM and rows with items of BOM. It's maybe complicated, but it works that way.
I want export BOM from SolidWorks and uploat it in SAP without next steps (open excel, add empty row, save, close excel...). Save template with empty row isn't possible so I need other way for it.
As you may know, I create macro for export from SolidWorks to Excel (here is thread: How to show Save As dialog for BOM ). Macro will copy data from SolidWorks BOM, open excel, copy data, add empty row and save it.
I hope, that is clear and it will be helpful for other users (maybe :-) )
If this doesn't work, then a macro can be made to quickly add those component into the active assembly (with one click if file name and path doesn't change).
There is a possibility but unfortunately that works with number above 0 only. Like in following picture, I've set qty for item #2 as .1. So in BOM it would b 0.1 X 2 = 0.2
Deepak, How did you manipulate the qty? i would like to know as i might be able to use this. I was able to imbed my virtual part(s) in a smart part that always gets added to the assemblies as well. this will accomplish getting my shop supply items on to a BOM and allow me to group them into the identified spools (I had to experiment with this a bunch but it works. the other way we talked about above only brought one virtual model into the route assy and would have required me to do more work. So since I'll already be doing the the work of locating this smart part in the assembly multiple times (once for each spool i will be identifying) i will get a virtual part for each spool as well. Now all I need to do is figure out how to manipulate the qty via property tab entry from my drawing(as easily as possible) since this will allow for spool specific data entry at a drawing level. So Deepak, is there a way for me to override the qty value from my custom property value generated at the drawing level?
Create a new property (custom or configuration as needed and name doesn't make any difference). Now assign it a value (it has to be a number and more than 0 but watch out for decimal places). Now set the BOM quantity to that property. So when you create BOM, the quantity in there would be multiplication of this number X number of instances.
Deepak, is there a way for me to replace the value ".1" with a reference to the custom property identified at my drawing level from my properties tab? the value would need to be driven down from the drawing property to the assy to drive back up and populate the BOM qty field.
I would doubt on that directly but might be possible via macro if the resultant value is a number.
yes, the value will always be a number (4 or higher) but yeah that is a little deep to try and push the property value. Since the virtual part is in my assembly model now can i drive my property value down from my assembly model property tab? trying to mess with that now but I cant seem to get there.
We use virtual parts on a regular basis. We have actually just started making blank (empty) parts with all of the information in them to populate the drawings instead of virtual. If it were me and I had several common parts that were used in a lot of assemblies I would make a sub-assembly first. Place all of my common "parts" in it them tell it to promote the children when used in a parent assembly. This will save some time by not having to add multiple parts each time. One and done. If you need different quantities in different assemblies this will not work.
yes, the different qty's in different assemblies is what's killing me. I have to use this concept in the routing tool. the routing tool claims the one virtial model to the identified spool so it forces me to have to insert multiple models so i have one for each identified spool requiring me to alsoi override the qty of each virtual part in each spool drawing. that's why this would have been very easy with just a static line on the BOM template but that doesnt work and trying to get the models to do what we need could and will work but it seems with more steps than it needs to be.

Just to follow up on this... I created a simple assembly like you have and added a custom property called Placeholder. Then in one of the parts I changed that property to "Nill". Then I added the below if then statement to my BOM QTY column to get part 346 to show as *. So for things like loctite, this will work for my workflow.

Deepak, you mentioned earlier that a macro could be used to insert the parts into the model, instead could I use a macro to insert the two lines of shop supply to the BOM? Code in a reference to override the BOM qty with a custom property found in the drawing?
