SolidWorks crashes every time for me when replacing an assembly in a drawing (Replace Model function) SW 2017 SP01. Anybody else seeing this?
I see SP02 is available so I will download and see if it still occurs.
ONE and TWO
Try to open the assembly and dropping it into the other assembly - like off to the side and then rebuild and save and close the assembly file, then open the assembly file first, then the drawing, go back to the assembly file and delete the assembly that you just put in and resave. All the while the drawing file was open, now do the replace component..
Don, We do a lot of assemblies that are the same but slightly different if that makes sense. There are many ways around creating duplicates of these assemblies and the way you're currently doing it should be just fine.
I too have encountered an issue here, there and everywhere when trying to replace parts or full on assemblies within a drawing and have resorted to what can only be termed as archaic by most of my peers but it's never let me down.
Typically, I will make sure all of my prior documents are checked in and not owned by me. Rename any/all of the components, sub-assemblies and assemblies as needed and open through the old "File .. Open" pull down. Then it's simply a matter of clicking the "References" tab and picking the appropriate replacement files prior to opening the drawing.
Edit: Removed screenshot ...
I know most will say using Windows Explorer is simply horrible and that the Replace Model function or SW Explorer are the way to go for this type of thing but it's never let me down once and I'm not a fan of having to deal with crashes so ...
Take it for what it's worth and good luck.
Please let us know if your problem is solved by SP2.0 of SWX2017. We've had similar problems to the point we've gone back to using 2016 except for those files we went too far down the road with 2017.
Please be sure to send in your crash reports with as much detail as possible and include the chant ONE and TWO
Thank you all for your input.
This seems to be fixed in SP02, which is, of course, good news.
Definitely Fixed. Have done it several times now without issue. :-)
Don, I'm very curious about this problem. Would you be able to share the files that had the problem? I have 2017SP1.0 on my computer at work and SP2.0 now on my home computer and also have 2016SP5.0 on both. I'd like to see if I can replicate the problem.
Sorry Dennis, these are work related files that cannot be shared.
Understood. I'm just looking for a way to verify that SP2.0 will improve my life. I'm a little gun shy after the problems I've had with 1.0
I'd seen this behavior before. Make sure the assembly is fully rebuilt including all ref if there is any
Have you asked your VAR to submit this issue to SOLIDWORKS Technical Support?
I have just had a similar issue, in a drawing trying use replace model function.
I am running SW 2017 SP02.
At this point, my VAR has traced this to an error with the .NET files in my computer.
Basically the windows file software is causing the crash not the solidworks portion of the software.
will report back on how well the repair goes.
