selecting edges through solids

In shaded view, I can zoom into a small solid body face in a large assembly and try to select said surface, however, there are so many edges behind the solid that solidworks insists on selecting rather than the face i see, it makes it impossible to select the face without hiding everything behind it. i don't want this anymore. if i cant see something on my screen i sure don't want to select it, especially over a solid object that im clearly clicking on. is there a way to turn this off? the solid is not transparent. Im just sick of selecting 30 edges/points trying to get to the solid, opaque face im clicking on. But, i dont want to have to filter faces all the time because i often select edges that i can see, otherwise i would just go to wire frame with hidden lines.
