I have been having lots of trouble in the following scenario:
I have an assembly containing subassemblies. If I select a subassembly in the graphics area of the top assembly and hit the Delete key, SW deletes either the selected feature of the subassembly or the component of the subassembly, not the subassembly itself.
Is there a cure for this bad behavior?
Training?
Reward yourself with ice cream?
Electro-shock deterrence?
Physically remove "delete" key?
Oh, you mean Solidworks is not behaving like you want. Sorry, not much you can do about that. I believe that behavior did change at some release in the past. Training is probably your best option. Use "select parent" to be sure that you're selecting what you want. Some moron on one of these forums wrote a "select parent" macro before it was a built-in feature. I like it better than the built-in function. You can map it to a shortcut key and easily navigate around.

Several releases ago there was an "enhancement" that allowed you to delete components from a sub-assembly from a upper level assembly (with no warning). It was roundly despised, so was modified in SW2015 (see here) to provide a dialog box to clarify what you want to delete. Are you not getting that?

That "enhancement" where Notes would combine if you would drag one a little too close to the other was one that I particularly hated. It's still available, but now we can turn it off. I will give the SW folks credit; when something like that happens they're pretty good about fixing it, and they've gotten better about giving a way to turn them off initially so they don't need fixing.
Walter, what I do is to select the component on screen and then refer to the assembly tree to make sure I selected the sub-assy to delete. You can also right click one of the components and select subassembly.

Negative, apparently that only comes up if you're working in 2015 or later.
This is what it's supposed to do and it's one of my most HATED "enhancements" SW has ever done. And I'm counting the icon change!
I can't tell you how many times I've destroyed an assembly when it was a sub, or almost destroyed it and caught it in an "OH CRAP" moment.
Another fun thing to do is suppress a component in a sub. There's no dialog box for that (I don't think?) to save you.
It just happens and you move on and save everything. Then you open the sub and watch all your mates blow up and have to figure out what happened and how to fix it.
Yes, I should pay better attention but it's too easy to do and it's different than what I was used to for many years.
Solidworks is has so many good features that I want to love the software, but every now and then they do something like this. It's like they have two different teams working on the software, one that knows what it is doing and one that works for the government and temps at Solidworks.
