I'm trying to add in a sketch picture to work from, I've done this before and never had a problem.
Can anyone tell me why it's come out looking like this?

Looks like a graphics card issue to me..
Just a heads up inserting pictures..
1. Don't insert pictures in sketches, drop the pictures onto a model face
2. Many people like to use the Decal feature, but I prefer to drop a jpeg right onto the model face
3. My prefered method using pictures (if you need decals) is creating a part that is the same size as the decal.
3. Then apply your picture to the model face
It's not, I've tried it with other images and it works perfectly fine. I did test this theory out.
Also I wasn't trying to attach it to a model, it was a sketch picture with the intention of tracing over the top, not to be used as a decal.

Are you using the sketch as a template to trace?
When I've this kind of weirdness in the past I've taken the offending file and re-saved in some graphics software. Most of the time that has fixed it. Its usually when its come from a mac I hasten to add.

It could be because of the GIF format. Try the attached PNG format.
