3D Interconnect with Creo files?

What is REALLY happening if you turn OFF 3D Interconnect and open a CREO assembly file?

It appears to me that it STILL opens the parts all "as reference" (green arrows) but you lose all the 3D Interconnect functionality like BREAK LINK.

Is this correct?

Intended Behavior?

This makes me feel like the only way to FULLY open/translate a Creo assembly is to open it with 3D Interconnect first and then break all the links?

(which there is no easy way to do, btw)
