Why is there an interference in an assembly made from split parts?

I am creating an assembly from a complicated lofted part that I used the split function to create two separate parts (one is a core, the other an outer sleeve made of a different material). When I create an assembly from these parts, Solidworks detects an interference along of the faces between them. How can there be an interference when the two separate parts were split from same part?
