My recommendation would be the newer driver (it probably did not exist when SW2016 was current).
I've dealt with this situation myself.
I recommend installing the certified driver for the version of Solidworks you're going to rely on the most in your work.
You might lose real view support in your older versions of the software.but it ought to be more stable than using the oldest versions driver
Guys, thanks so much for the suggestions! Ironically the version I'll probably use most is the older (2016) version. Regardless, I'll try updating to the version certified for 2017 and see how that goes.
