Hi,
I want to replace a structural member, say an MC Channel, with a formed sheetmetal. If the material properties & the section modulus of two pieces are equal, can I safely say that the I can replace the MC channel with sheetmetal?
Do I need to compare any other properties other than material and section modulus?
Any advice will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Sandeep

If your C Channel is loaded prefectly parallel to the 'legs' only, matching the section modulus should be sufficient. However, for any other loading, (torsion or side loading), you should run the two sections thru Simulation to verify the response.
To Bill's point, running a Buckling study using both designs and the anticipated loading, you should see a similar buckling load factor (the primary output from a buckling study). Hopefully they are both greater than 2 or 3.
Good luck!
