I have a sketch in an assembly that I need to extrude. How do I do that? I know how to do it in a part file, but not an assembly.
I did, you don't need to create a plane or create a sketch in your assembly. You need to do all of it in your part. As Glenn said you can't add material in assemblies only remove. So all your work needs to be in a part not in the assembly. You can go to edit part in your assembly by rmb on your part or you can choose to open the part to edit it. it. If you want to convert entities or add any relation directly to other parts in your assembly you need to go to edit part.
You can't create material directly in an Assembly, only remove it. You can create a virtual Part in the Assembly, edit that Part within the Assembly, start a new Sketch, and use the "Convert Entities" tool to copy the sketch from the Assembly to the virtual Part and then extrude it there.
the convert entities tool doesn't work
Go to Insert > Component > New Part. This will create a part within your assembly. You would then edit this part and put your sketch in it. You will be able to convert entities once you are in edit part in a new sketch. Hope this is clear.
I made a new part. Made a plane from it. Sketched on the plane. Now I need to extrude the sketch. See attached files on the original post.

Yes, it does. It worked for me. You need to be editing the Part, and in an active sketch.
