My textbook say its in insert/surface/knit but I don't see it there. I'm in an assembly.

Where is the surface tool bar? It's not with the assembly layout sketch etc. even if I right click to add more toolbars. It's also not with File edit view etc.
Yes, you have to be either editing a part (in the assembly) in context or have a part open separately:
Or, alternatively, you can RMB on the tabs (while you are in a part) and select the "Surfaces" tab to turn it on,
Then
OR (and I LOVE this feature):
Select "Command" in the search function at the top and type in "knit", then select
Then select the "Show command location" button
And you get this handy little red arrow pointing out where it is:
It's right where your textbook says it is, but that's only for working in a Part file.
The only way you can use the feature in an Assembly would be to edit a Part within an Assembly (right-click on the Part in the Assembly tree or graphics area and choose the "Edit Part" icon). Either your textbook left that out, or you missed it.
Edit a part in the assembly and you will see it.
