No shading on objects

I am having trouble with the appearance of objects in Solidworks. Originally objects would be shaded with outlines (like normal), but now they are only made of one colour. If I select "Shaded" mode without outlines, I get a flat block of grey, with no detail at all.

It seemed to start after using the "view orientation" tool. After using the tool, which should temporarily show a single-colour preview of the object in a thumbnail, it would remain in this single-colour mode. I have tried re-building, re-starting the program, the computer, and saving a duplicate of the file. This does not work.

The only way I have found to remove this horrible colour characteristic is to copy the object into a new file, but this is not always ideal (particularly when making assemblies).

Does anyone know how to resolve this?
