propagating appearance to intersect bodies

Question asked by Eric Anderson on Nov 21, 2016

I'm looking for a method to apply an appearance to a body (eg stock material), then cut the stock material body into multiple bodies and propagate the appearance to the new bodies while maintaining the original mapping of the appearance to the cut surfaces, think a jigsaw puzzle. I know that I can split the body first then apply the appearance and it would work, but for my specific problem I need to combine bodies after they are cut, which I think messes with how the surfaces or bodies are accounted for in the background, so the appearance disappears or is applied oddly. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
