SW 2017 Linear Sketch Pattern

When I add a linear sketch pattern in a sketch in SW2017 I'm able to drag & drop y-axis but x-axis is locked and doesn't move.

I can't find any relations for the horizontal construction line to delete it and make it move.

I hadn't this problem in 2016 version.

Two videos are added to show the difference between 2016 & 2017 versions in linear Sketch pattern.

While I'm waiting for our var to response to this problem, I thought somebody here may be able to help.

Any kind of advice/help is much appreciated.

Correct Answer

This could be a bug or half fixed feature. I'm sure you must have already reported to your VAR.

What do you suggest instead? Create a hole with hole wizard and Linear Pattern it?
Doesn't it make the tree extend twice larger as it should be? Because each component
we create has a lot of holes and extruded cuts.

To be true I can't understand what it says.
If sketch patterns should be fully defined, why only y-axis is not fully defined.
And why the software tries to full defined it. they can ask the user to fully define and not let him exit the sketch until it's full defined.

More over I created a sketch pattern without adding the dimension (as stated above) but still only x-axis is locked and can't be dragged.

Personally I never used sketch patterns. I find its much easier to have your first hole then pattern it as a feature. Much easier to edit down the line too if you need to change your pattern.

Yes. I will gladly accept a longer feature tree to get increased stability and ease of editing.

The behavior in 2016 is a bug that I reported back in version 2013 or 2014. I haven't tried it in 2017 yet.

I don't even think about it because I have trained myself to add Horizontal/Vertical relations to the construction geometry.

I am using the sketch to define stairs and so the patterned qty, the run on each step and the total y dimension are defining the angle and rise for each step. I cannot have a set angle as it seems to be making me do for 2017. This was VERY usefull and it is extremly frustrating that they would lock the sketch pattern like this!

Rick I believe you didn't get it.
I hadn't any problem in previous versions and I add the relations myself too.
The problem is that in 2017 version the horizontal line is locked before adding any relationship.

I have the same problem.

I use linear sketch patterns as a way to copy certain geometry from one place to another, maintaining the internal relations of the original geometry in the copy.
I usually:
1. make a sketch pattern
2. drag the copied geometry over to where I need it
3. fix the copied geometry to it's new home with relations/dimensions.
Solidworks 2017 breaks this for me :-( It's a pretty terrible thing to break, whether it's a "feature" or a bug.

My hacky workaround for now (I would love to hear if there's a better/proper way to do this):
1. Mirror the geometry I want to pattern through an unconstrained centerline
2. Mirror the mirrored geometry through another unconstrained centerline
3. Convert the intermediate geometry to construction lines.
4. Drag the final geometry to wherever I need it, and full define it.

Erik,

With sketch pattern broken you have developed a workaround.

You also could try this...

Highlight the geometry you want a copy of. Hold down the Ctrl key. Drag and drop (any random location) a fresh copy relations included.
Now just move and define it.

Horizontal and vertical are not locked for me. maybe if you add an Angle dimension (not 90°) at creation, just another work around.

Try the following inputs.
Delete out the additional direction1 entities.
The direction 2 entities are then movable without an angle constraint.

John, I feel I'm lost.
1. Your first screen shot shows Direction1 as vertical. In this case your Direction1 is locked and you can't drag it (I assume). It shows that one direction is locked in 2017 version.
2. I need both directions. I can't delete on of them.
Am I misunderstanding you? A short video or a more detailed explanation is much appreciated.

It does solve the issue of the horizontal axis being locked, but ends up not solving the entire issue. Carry on. Thought I had come across something useful, but ends up not to be.

I to used this a lot to create my rise/run on stairs, not sure who thought this was a good idea.

the only work around I have found is do a pattern in both the X&Y and but the X is still always locked
horizontal or by the angle you enter in the pattern. the Y axis can be dragged and I assume that is because
they are not locking the angle dimension between the axes.

I have not found a good work around to make both axis free to drag,
This needs to go back to the way it was in 2016, what a pain !!!!
