yes, there are several ways to make a surface into a solid, including Thicken, Knit and even Fill can do it.
Of course the surface body has to meet certain rules for solids, and you should run all of the checking routines to make sure the geometry is good (tools, check, as well as verification on rebuild +Ctrl-Q)
You can also use one solid to cut another. Creating a part from a mold cavity might be tedious using surface functions. For multibody see Combine. for assembly see Cavity.
