I normally use Catia V5 for mechanical design, but in this case I need
to use SolidWorks. In Catia there is a function named Combine that can
be used to make a solid from two different sketches (i.e. sketch from
the front and one form the top). Is there something similar in
SolidWorks?

The tools that combine two sketches to produce solid bod are Lofted Boss and Swept Boss.

You would need to make extrudes first for both sketches. Then you could use combine or intersect in SOLIDWORKS.
I hope you all worked in CATIA , there is a command to create a solid with these two sketches get selected.

No, I did not work in CATIA, but I think that SolidWorks has not got similar tool as you described...

Haven't worked with CATIA and there is no "One Feature" in SolidWorks for this........

So please, You need to make Extruded Boss for both sketches. Then you should use the Combine feature with Common comand. Everythink you can find in the SoldiWorks INSERT menu >> then Features / Boss base
SolidWorks menu INSERT > Features > Combine > Common
!!!! When you do the second Boss you should not check the followng "Merge results", then you can combine it

You can do the same with one extrude boss and one extrude cut with the cut side flipped.
