    Sheet metal flat pattern properties and meta data

      Hi

      I work as a designer in a bespoke machinery workshop, we do a lot in sheetmetal, this means i create a lot of flat pattern drawings which are sent to the laser cutters in dwg format.

      I create one laser drawing with all the flat patterns spread out over it.

      Each part is a 1:1 scale and has a list of things under it that the laser cutter needs like:

      1. name or description
      2. Material thickness
      3. Material type
      4. Amount we require
      5. material finish

      My question is can Solidworks add this information? It already knows the thickness and material type. I have to add this all manually and the chance of a mistake is higher if i don't correctly check it all over. And mistakes have been made on thickness because i typed it in wrong.

      Is there a way of selecting this information so i can add it easily?

          You can create a drawing template that references these properties.  Some are standard properties and some are custom properties.  Set these properties in each part file (Name/Description, Material Type, Qty Req'd, Finish).  Thisckness is there by definition, you just have to access it.

           

          I don't get putting multiple 1:1 flat patterns with this information on a single dxf unless that is a single dxf for a job/project and you are relying on the operator to extract what he needs.  If parts are of different thickness they cannot be cut from the same sheet and if the quantities are not equal then just cutting multiple copies of the whole sheet won't do either.  If this is indeed an effort to just package the information for the operator to extract then you can certainly do it your way, but I would think separate files would actually be easier for the operator to use.  It's your call how you do it.

           

          Creating a drawing template with these properties automatically showing is easy to do.
