Creating an "empty" version of an assembly

I often receive an assembly that is very unmanageable in terms of size and performance. I have tried the lightweight and large assembly mode and even the design review mode. These are largely ineffective and I have my suspicions that it is due to poor modeling practices ( i.e. Way to much low level detail being modelled in every sub component).

One way I deal with this is to manually create an assembly that only has the external components (i.e. Those visible without taking a section cut). I can then use this assembly for global fit checking, generating graphics for a presentation, etc.

This is quite tedious to do manually and I was wondering if there are any tools to help with this. built into SW or if anyone out there has come up with any clever ways of doing this?

Thank you.
