In SW 2017 with MBD I can export a STEP 242 file, is there anyway to import this format and get the PMI?
I don't think it's possible even when working with a native file. While there are some newer formats out there for STEP and IGES standards I don't believe this is something SW has the ability to do at this time. While it would be a fantastic enhancement I think the underlying differences between SW and some of the higher end packages out there are simply to "apples to oranges".
I had read something some time ago about an add-in package to do something very similar but if memory serves I think it was primarily based on CATIA translation.
I may have not understood this correctly, but I was curious to know whether SW17 can import a STEP 242 file?
I have an NX part which has the PMI in it, the part file is exported to AP 242 format. I have been trying to import this file in SW but it throws up error. I am new to SolidWorks and I might be doing it wrong all this while.
With the new release (SW 2017) it is supposed to be able to do just that. There is still a bit of talk about whether or not the MBD package is actually required but at the "What's New" sessions I attended last week the word was that you do not need the MBD package to import/export. I still don't know for a fact though and will believe it when I see it.
SOLIDWORKS MBD is needed to export STP242 with PMI.
You can read SOLIDWORKS, STP242, Creo and CATIA models with 3D annotations in eDrawings 2017.
Here are several screenshots.
I tried using e-Drawings 2017, it works fine in reading STEP242 files exported from SW17. If I understand this correctly, Solidworks 2017 still does not support importing STEP242 files rather the current edition only supports publishing the CAD parts to STEP242.
SOLIDWORKS 2017 doesn't read STP242 yet.
Took me a few but this is the add-in package I had read about. Now this was back in 2012 that I read it so I don't know if it does any good but here's hoping. Further research says they're a Gold Partner but there are no dates posted anywhere so I can't speak for their current status.
Off topic: Noticed you mentioned running SW2017 ... We're only running 2016 currently and I don't know if this is something that's coming out with the new (SW2017) release or not.
This is indeed a feature of SW2017, with MBD you can export a STEP 242 file that has your PMI embedded in it, you can also create an MBD 3D PDF drawing and attach a STEP 242 again will all of you PMI.
Thanks for the link to the add in package I will check it out.
eDrawings 2017 can read STP242. Would you be able to share some models with PMI, in STP242 or other formats?
We'd love to do some research about the PMI data.
My email is OboeDotWuAt3dsDotCom.
I am running SW 2018 beta and it has this capability.
