Creating a new assembly and parts from an existing assembly.

I have made an in-context assembly of a typical cabinet my company manufactures.  I want to copy this assembly so I can make similar cabinets of different dimensions.  These new cabinets will require new part numbers.  I am looking for a reasonable work flow to copy the original assembly and create an entirely new one.  I was hoping to find a way to make a template assembly (inclusive of in-context parts) but that doesn't seem to exist.  I am using pack and go, locating the new files in a separate directory, renaming each file and redirecting the references. However, I need to go into each part in the assembly and re-establish the context.  Is there a better way?
