Regarding the amount of control i2 has over shadows, etc:

1) Are all shadows now "transparent", to use PW terminology?
2) Are they REALLY shadows, ie, a hypothetical sunset HDR should cast long sharp shadows of my model? Or are they just appropriately dark/murky areas under/around a model?
2) What about effects like caustics that need a light source?

Yes.

It's like setting 'Global Shadow Control' (in the 'Lighting' tab) to 'Transparent'

Yes, they really are shadows.... but

It's like setting 'Edges' (in the 'Lighting' tab) past the center, where they are very soft.

Here you can barely see the shadow...

2) What about effects like caustics that need a light source?

When 'bounces' are past '0', you get what I call "Poor Man's Caustics".

Look under the sphere, and inside the dome...

You still need a real light to get true caustics, however, the settings I show in the article can still serve as the foundation.

Here I...

*) Enabled one Directional Light
*) Shadows set to 'Global' (which is off)
*) Modified it's brightness to '.1' (So it doesn't light up the model... I.I. does that already)
*) Modified it's 'Energy' to '.5'
*) Modified 'C and G' photons to '1,000,000'
*) Enabled 'Caustics'
*) Radius is '.1'
*) Accuracy 'Max'

It's a bit exaggerated for effect....

You know, some folks out there have known me for a long time. I do my best to give out free tips and SolidWorks models. It's not easy. I've worked hard on a lot of this stuff.

The only payment I would wish for, at this moment in time, is for all to understand how *money* really works.

Why?

Because it is 'designed' and 'engineered'... to fail.

(I know those are two really BIG words to understand here in this forum, but I'm sure a Pro/E guy can help you).

I wanted to quickly mention here that I updated the PDf just hours after the first release with a helpful hint.

If your pdf has this...

than you have the latest.

Basically, it's a workaround for 'splotches'. They can really ruin your rendering.

Here is a perfect example...

Hi, excellent document!

I'm getting grainy shadows with a "shadow floor", indirect illumination and HDRI. Is this something you experienced also? Do you have a solution? Thanks!

Yes, there are some solutions...

1) Set 'Anti-aliasing quality' to 'max'

Sometimes that's not enough, so then the next thing to do (in addition to the above) is...

2) Look on my chart and set 'Indirect Illumination' to 'Low'

If there's still grains...

3) Render to file at last 6,000 pixels wide (the higher the better)

(BTW, all of the above is what I do on many occasions)

The final step would be to...

4) Do all of the above, except try the next higher setting on the chart which is 'Med' and work your way up.

Hopefully you won't have to get too extreme.

Thanks Michael! Indeed, setting the anti-aliasing to very high or max got rid of this grainyness, without having to render for hours on very high indirect illumination settings. Great!

FWIW, here is a collection of various renderings using the techniques illustrated in the Tips&Tricks letter.

Only minor tweaks to the appearances were all I needed to do. On the water jet cutter, I added a blue light.

I threw in the "All Imaging Pyramid" as a gentle reminder of... well you'll find out soon enough.

I am confused as to why Photoworks would not have an option for rendering sections of a given area at different times or give you an option to automatically cut up a rendering into small bits and then past it back together if you get the all to often error message of not enough memory. Does anyone have a good work around for this?

Check the "Use memory settings" box in the PW options. This should help. I don't know why it was not a default in SW2008, but it is now in 2009.

I've got a decent machine, and I couldn't imagine completing a render with as many components as in mike's examples...

what are some of your render times....?

I'm running 3G with memory settings checked and I still get out of resources errors on simple 10-15 part assemblies(using render setting far below mike suggestions).

SW2009, SP2
precision T7400
dual, quad core 2.83 GHz
quadro 3700, 512 MB
XP SP3 32 bit
4 gig ram

How much of your resources are taken up by programs that are loaded at start-up? Many of those even though they aren't open eat quite a bit of RAM because they are pre-loaded into the background.

When you fist start up your computer (like a restart/reboot), and you are at the desktop with no programs, hit Ctrl-Alt-Del to open the Task Manager, select the Processes Tab and sort the columns using the Memory header. This will tell you all the open processes and how much system memory they are consuming.

Any programs that you don't need to be running at start-up, can have their entry deleted from the Start-up folder and leave more of your resources available.
