Why is there no provision for relief in dowel holes? Typically, nobody wants to ream a dowel hole for the full thickness of either the detail or plate it mounts on?
I'm not sure I follow. Are you just looking for a hole with a slight counter bore on top of it? Do you want the hole like that or just an automatic note that signifies the way it's manufactured?
IE: (Press Fit 1/4" Dowel in a 1" plate) [Letter F] Ø.257 x .50dp on Ø.2495 thru ... type of thing?
You mean adding option(s) in SW hole wizard for dowel pin relief?
What is it you need that isn't already there in the Hole Wizard? There are many options for fit/clearance based on well established industry standards. You can even make custom sizing if you can't find the fit you want.
Most definitely Dennis. That's where I thought this was going as well.
Also, if those don't give you quite what your looking for you can use the "Legacy Hole" wizard and create your own standard.
I believe Michael is referring to is like on a ø1/2 dowel in a 1-1/2 thick material.. We would generally put a ø3/8 through hole, then ream the ø1/2 to the specified depth (generally for a ø1/2 dowel, it would be 3/4"-1", depending on function). The smaller ø3/8 allows for a cheaper hole and allows the ability to "vent" the hole and a way to drive it out if needed. To do this like you said a legacy hole would be needed. You could also "Stack" holes, but i try to stay away from that.
No problem CAD, we do a lot of that as well. On the Tool and Die side of our business we do a mix/match of all the above. Typically due to our plate thickness' we will have a relief that basically just works as a lead to a press fit dowel. Essentially allowing the dowel to have less contact area and be driven in/out a little easier on our through holes. (When we aren't allowed to do that we end up lapping to fit which is tedious at best, especially in 2" thick A2, lol) We try to use knockout holes (as we call them) for the drive pin punches to assist whenever the dowel needs to seat. I think we're all on the same page here, just like the software we're using ... So many ways to get to the same end goal.
Exactly like that, John. My exact question was, is there a provision in the Hole Manager to create the dowel holes as you described. All I've been able to do is create a dowel hole that just is the same diameter through all, then add a relief hole.
