Does anybody know how I can choose my own image and use it as a background in photoworks?

In the photoworks "scene" menu there is a "back/foreground" tab. Choose "image" from the dropdown menu and browse to the appropriate file.
Choose whether it is scaled, tiled, spherical or cubic. I think scaled may be what you are after.
Hope this helps.
