So how do you get yourself to read through a monster like the
Solidworks 2007 Bible (over a 1000 pages)? This what I did:
In February of this year, i started a new job. I needed to learn Solidworks. An ASME friend put me in contact with a VAR and the VAR gave me a personal edition of Solidworks 2007. How Lucky!!! I bought the Solidworks 2007 Bible. I started reading it. Eventually I got distracted and stopped reading. I was 200 pages in. I struggled for the next five months only getting through 200 more pages for a total of 400 pages.
On August 8th I had a bright idea. I went to the ATM took out a $100. I gave the money to a coworker I trusted to hold. I told him, "You can keep this money if I don't finish the Solidworks 2007 Bible before the end of the month." This was a great way to hold myself accountable and motivate me to finish a personal goal. I FINISHED THE BOOK A FEW MINUTES AGO!!! YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS! It was a lot of time but it was worth it. I am way better at Solidworks now! I plan on taking the Certified SolidWorks Professional (CSWP) exam soon.
HOW TO MOTIVATE YOURSELF: Set a personal goal that is attainable. Give something of value to someone you trust to hold. Let them keep the thing of value if you don't meet that goal in a given time period.
This works. I will use it again.
