Sending unused parts/drawings/assemblies to obsolete folder

Hi all,

I've a quick question. In our project template folders at work we have a drawings folder which is divided up into part models (divided into tooling parts and parts by manufacturers), assembly models and detailed drawings (customer supplied, tooling parts etc). As we're working on a project we design up parts and assign them part numbers but some of them become obsolete, i.e. they're not used or they are revised.

I want to be able to move the obsolete/redundant parts into another folder (named obsolete or redundant) but I want to maintain assembly references. I've noticed so far that this doesn't work with cut and past. For exmple if I have an assembly named A606-A001 and I rev this up to A606-A001R01 and then cut and paste the A606-A001 into the redundant folder and then maye open a detailed drawing of it, it can't find it. I just want to e able to maintain references.

Do I need PDM for this or can it be done on Solidworks or Solidworks Explorer?

God bless,
