ben, you have calculated Ry but forgotten to include x
component of reaction force at R (i mean Rx). if you equate the
total force on x axis to zero, that leaves Rx=F*cos45=7.07 and the
total reaction force is
R=(Rx^2+Ry^2)^.5=(2.02^2+7.07^2)^.5=7.35

well if you consider this as a simple single axis stress problem,
your answer is correct but here it mentions that the cylinder has a
decrese in diameter. so you cant consider this as a single axis
stress problem and use the simplified hooks law. you have to use
the generalized hook's law (multiaxial) in cylindrical coordinate
system which considers both radial and longitudinal strain. since i
haven't used it for a while i can't seem to apply this correctly.
so i'll check later and give you a feedback.
