Is it possible to have an extra column in the BOM which indicated the level of the parts/(sub)assemblies of the top level?

What you explain works, you can see what is a part or assembly, all the way to the lowest level.
However, that's still not what I'm looking for unfortunately.
What you're refering to displays in the SolidWorks window, but won't export with the rest when you do an export of the BOM.
What I'm aiming for is an extra column in the BOM which states the level as I described.
Yesterday I learned that this is not possible YET in solidworks.
It is in an SPR at the moment, so hopefully it will become available.. I think it's weird that something like this hasen't existed in SW yet, as I find it being a very important "feature" of an indented BOM..

Using detailed numbering on an indented BOM will show item numbers with levels as:
1 Assembly1
1.1 Sub-assembly 1
1.1.1 Sub-assembly 1 part 1
1.1.2 Sub-assembly 1 part 2
1.2 Sub-assembly 2
1.2.1 Sub-assembly 2 part 1
1.2.2 Sub-assembly 1 part 2
2 Assembly 2
2.1 .....
etc

The thing with that method is you need to do an excel trick in order to get the level as an integer. You'd need to count number of characters, or number of periods, or something of that nature.
This is an extra thing which could go wrong.
For the moment I'm indeed using such a method, but I'd like to have simply, an extra column in the SolidWorks BOM export which indicates the level directly, rather than having to do an extra excel trick which possibly could go wrong.
Have you tried indented mode? of the bom?
And then left of the bom click the 3 'triangles' to expand and you should be able to click on the '+' sign next to the assembly/sub-assembly to expand. not sure if it will work in more than 1 level.
